As a home inspector, I often get asked by clients what they can do to prepare for a home inspection. While there are some things that homeowners can do to help the inspection process go smoothly, ultimately it is the responsibility of the home inspector to thoroughly inspect the property.
There are a few ways that homeowners can prepare for a home inspection:
1. Make sure all utilities are turned on.
This includes water, gas, electricity, and any other services that your home uses. We need to be able to test all systems in the home and if utilities are not turned on, it makes our job more difficult.
2. Provide us with a clear path to all areas of the home that we will need to access.
This means removing any items that may be blocking our way such as cars in the driveway, toys in the yard, or furniture inside the home.
3. Be prepared to answer questions about your home.
We may ask about recent updates or renovations that have been made, when certain appliances were installed, or how long you have lived in the property. Having this information readily available will help us provide a more accurate report.
