Keeping Mosquitoes Away From Your Property
Schedule Your Home Inspection!
Mosquitoes breed and thrive in the warmer months. These pesky bugs are annoying and can even carry diseases. Learning about keeping mosquitoes away from your property will make your backyard a more enjoyable place to spend time. Make these changes in your yard to prevent mosquitoes from taking over.
Remove Standing Water
Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Even a puddle as shallow as an inch can become a mosquito breeding ground. Old tires, buckets, empty flower pots, and pool covers or tarps are some common water collectors. Empty out the water and keep items stored or covered.
Clogged gutters create areas of standing water. They should be cleaned out regularly. Water features, like fountains and decorative ponds, can be treated to kill mosquito larvae. Add fish to small ponds that eat mosquito eggs.
Keeping Mosquitoes Away by Trimming Shrubs and Bushes
Bushes and shrubbery provide shaded areas for mosquitoes to escape during the heat of the day. Overgrown bushes attract mosquitoes to your yard. Make sure shrubs are trimmed and neat. Leave at least four to six inches between plants and the structure of your home.
Use Fans for Keeping Mosquitoes Away
Use fans in outdoor areas where people congregate. The air output from the fans makes it difficult for mosquitoes to fly around the area. Fans also disperse scents that mosquitoes are attracted to, so they will be less likely to bother you.
Treat the Yard
Even if you have a larger yard, you can benefit from treating your yard against mosquitoes. For maximum effect, yard treatment should be done on a monthly basis from around April through October, depending on which region you live in.
In addition to these tips, use citronella candles, torches, and bug spray for keeping mosquitoes away. There are many ways to prevent these aggravating bugs from ruining your summer evenings outside.
